Oracy

At Latton Green, we firmly believe that oracy is at the very heart of our students' development. It is essential not just for enhancing academic success, but also for building confidence and fostering a sense of belonging among our children. When students share their thoughts and ideas, they are not just being heard; their voices are valued, creating an environment where every opinion matters. This commitment to oracy permeates everything we do – from classroom lessons to collective worship, and even spills into energetic playground conversations.

To ensure a clear progression in developing confident and articulate speakers, we employ a bespoke oracy curriculum tailored to meet the needs of our students. Our oracy framework invites children to give feedback and praise to their peers, thereby enhancing their communication skills while allowing them to reflect on the delivery of a talk.

We recognise that meaningful learning occurs through talk, whether it be through structured debates, discussions, or varied group settings like trios and 'the onion'. These interactions are vital for nurturing active listening skills, an essential component of effective communication. In this context, children are encouraged to expand their vocabulary of responses, starting with simple expressions like “I agree” or “I disagree”, and evolving to “I would like to build on” or “Can I clarify?”.

In addition, our termly oracy challenges unite the whole school community, giving students the opportunity to present their work – be it a poem, superhero speech, or monologue. These moments not only showcase their speaking skills but also celebrate the unique voices of our children, reinforcing the belief that at Latton Green, oracy truly brings us together.
